Capacity

Burner capacity, also called the burner rating, is the range between the highest and lowest heat output (BTUs) of the burner. It is calculated when there is acceptable combustion and stable flame in the burner.

When choosing an industrial gas burner, always check that the model you are considering has adequate capacity depending on your specific applications. A small-capacity means that the system cannot reach the temperature you need it to and also means that you can only work on smaller loads at a time. This can lead to delays and even downtime, which affects the bottom line. Too much capacity means paying for a burner that is not being utilized to its fullest capacity.

Turndown Performance

Turndown is the ratio between the highest and lowest capacity. The turndown dictates the burner’s ability to handle loads of various sizes. The turnaround should be larger than or equal to the turndown required for a specific application. For most applications, the turndown does not have to be large but is still an important factor when selecting a burner. Inadequate turndown can lead to production issues and damage to the product being processed.

Mounting Options

Mounting is very important not only for burner operation but also for proper maintenance of the gas burner. The two types are in-duct burners and wall-mounted burners. While wall-mounted burners are a lot easier to access, making maintenance easy, they are often affected by cross velocities. In-duct burners, on the other hand, reside inside the duct, making them less accessible. However, they handle cross velocities better than wall-mounted industrial gas burners. The type of mounting you choose will depend on your specific applications and requirements.

Flame Geometry

A burner’s flame geometry is an important consideration as it determines if the burner will fit into a specific chamber. For burners that have long flames, that could lead to flame impingement. A burner’s manual can help you figure out the proper flame geometry

Think About the Process Details

It is also important to think about what the specific process requirements are when selecting a burner. For example, there are some processes that require an indirect fire method. The best way to achieve this is to direct the flame into a tube, which is not possible with some burner models. Once you know what your specific processes require, it becomes easier to choose the right burner.

When choosing a burner, special considerations do come into play. Apart from the characteristics described above, you also need to think about the availability of the fuel you would like to use, the emission requirements, and the different codes and standards that apply to your industry.
