Renovation of your house can be an exciting adventure as well as a significant undertaking, especially when it comes to monetary factors and the stress that follows. Not to mention the discomfort and inconvenience it brings to the family members during which the normal life is disrupted and situations may turn chaotic easily. However, that does not mean it’ll be a nightmare. Here are some pearls of wisdom that may prove helpful – 

  • Being specific is important. If you don’t know exactly what you want, it can go off the rails quickly. Simply wanting ‘a new bathroom’ is vague; you have to narrow it down (for instance, you want a wall knocked down to add more space, or deciding whether you want concrete floor or tiles). Do your research and you won’t have unpleasant surprises.
  • Be realistic with the budget. Wanting the best stuff is, of course, natural, however, it’s easy to get carried away and lose track of reality (read ‘budget’). Running the numbers beforehand will be a good decision. Visiting the local stores and design centers to get an estimate would be helpful as well. 
  • Expect surprises. While the surprise may not always be something like a hidden door or a secret dungeon, unexpected complications may crop up from time to time. You may find something wrong with the foundations of the floor, the wiring inside the walls that may require reconfiguration, costing you more time and money than what you envisioned beforehand. 
  • It isn’t just about architects, engineers, and painters. Renovation requires many other Tradespeople as well.   • Be flexible with your timeline. It does not always go according to plan, and often it is no one’s fault. Plans might change midway as well, so be open to ideas and suggestions. Weather can interfere and delay projects, some necessary supplies may be on backorder, to give a few examples. 
  • Airtight contracts will prevent any misunderstanding. It should have payment schedules, estimated timeline, with a detailed record of all the work that is to be done. Your contract should be clear on financial responsibilities, liabilities, and maybe even penalties for missed deadlines/milestones.

The problem with a dream house is that it might not exist in real life, however, that doesn’t mean you should not be happy with the work done. Being prepared and being flexible is always helpful.
